I can say that I haven't seen that on either Ubuntu 12.04 or openSUSE 12.3, both of which are listed as supported for the version of Yocto BSP has.
And I have seen various strange issues like this one (though not this one specifically) on Ubuntu 13.something and openSUSE 13.1, which had never GCC and make versions. Even openSUSE 12.3 has some specific problem with one of the packages because make there is a little too new for the yocto version at hand.
So the real (or the fastest) solution here is most probably just to switch to the supported distro. Maybe just for building the BSP, as a VM (see e.g. my image I've created with SUSE Studio and shared in this community: Re: Do you want to have a Linux VM pre-configured for Galileo BSP building?).
